Can a renter be found liable for fire damage if they were not in code? - code one smoke alarm

A recent fire in my apartment. (Vela left alone, when I went to the bathroom). I'm not sure. My apartment was not the Fire Code. There have been no smoke detectors in each apartment and the fire extinguisher, I bought one for me. The heater is next to the stove. One of the transfer of liablitlity for them?

The responsibility must be the owners, because there was a fire. However, none of your personal belongings will be covered and concievably owner can sue for reimbursement of your deductible.
